Multi-Antenna Wireless Communications Systems:
Fundamentals, Key Concepts and Applications
 Prof. Rodrigo C. de Lamare,
Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeir and University of York, United Kingdom.
This short course aims to introduce the principles of multiple-antenna wireless communication systems and the fundamental concepts required to start research in this area. Fundamental concepts for the adoption of multiple antennas are discussed along with the benefits and the problems encountered in the design of such systems. Several configurations of multiple-antenna systems are presented by using signal models based on linear algebra, including multiuser, distributed, networked and massive multiple-antenna systems.  Fundamental capacity aspects of multiple-antenna systems are discussed along with the most widely-used transmission schemes such as spatial multiplexing and diversity configurations. Practical effects of imperfections in antena arrays are discussed along with their impact on the capacity of systems.  This short course also covers design of precoding and detection  techniques that employed to mitigate interferences. In this contexto, we presente precoding techniques  that require knowledge of the channel such as channel inversion, vector perturbation, block diagonalization and Tomlinson-Harashima. In the exposition of detection techniques, we review the optimal maximum likelihood detector and suboptimal detectors such as linear and successive interference cancellation.  The course also briefly explains how such multiple-antenna systems can be used broadband access techniques with multicarrier communications. The course concludes with a discussion about current research topics.
